Etiquette on Visiting the Temple

Etiquette on Visiting the Temple

To the right of the main gate, Shitenno-mon, is a statue of Shungen Daitoku. Make a bow before it and then go through the gate into the temple precinct. Wash you hands and rinse your mouth at the stone basin built beneath a simple roof supported by wooden pillars. Bow again before ascending the flight of steps leading up to the Main Hall. The Nio-mon Gate stands at the top of the stairs, providing access to the Main Hall. In front of the hall, bow and throw your offering into the offering box, then make your prayer to Izuna Daigongen with your hands clasped palms together. Then, still with your hands together in the prayer position, recite the mantra “Namu Izuna Daigongen,” envisioning the form of the deity in your mind.
